Sociological Effects
The current trend of more women being admitted into the upper echelons of the judicial branch is continuing to grow. It is still not all being accepted because as shown in the cartoon, not everyone believes that a woman is capable of understanding and handling all of the issues that come before her. Women are being treated as if they are too emotional to handle the issues in a logical way and to apply the law without bias. The Gender stereotypes that have been taught to everyone since they were young make women out to be irrational and emotional. This has lead to women judges not being elected or not being retained because this stereotype is being reflected in the evaluations of women judges. It is leading to women judges being treated as if they are not as competent as their male counterpart, even if there is no empirical evidence that proves this. |
